Rio De Janeiro is a beautiful city but has rightfully the reputation of being dangerous. We recommend the following zones in Zona Sud for booking your accomodation:

Avoid staying in the center (Centro) and steer away from the north zone of the city (Zona Norte)
Favela Tour in Rio ?
Rio has over 500 favelas on its hills.
The informal favela neighborhoods house over 20% of the city’s population. However, they are often under control by gangs and have limited public services. Police do not usually enter a favella.
Using a tour guide, it is possible to visit a favela but keep in mind that you might spot armed teenagers. So it's never 100% safe.

Paris danger zones
